Data
The data behind the book
Every dataset the book rests on or takes a number from, as the Companion uses it: 31 datasets, 68 tables. Each one downloads as CSV, one file per table, and as JSON. The files are the ones the pages draw, so a number on a page and a number in its download are the same number.
How to read these files
CSV files are UTF-8 and open in any spreadsheet. Nested fields are flattened into dotted column names (for example axes.stability); a list of values sits in one cell, separated by |. The JSON file is the dataset exactly as the site reads it.
Scores are judgments made against written rubrics, not measurements. The rubrics, the calibration and the argument for each scale are on Methodology and Method and Sources. Where a cell was researched, its justification and source travel with it in the file.
Civilization Scorecard: the roster, four axes and three conditions
Every roster row, Sumer 2600 BCE to the present, joined to its four-axis profile (stability, surplus, carriers, output), the dragon’s three conditions (credentialing monopoly, self-regulating class, no exit) and any fate the book names. The second CSV has one line per researched cell with its justification, sources and provenance. The book counts fifty-four civilizations; the roster carries 56 rows.

The awareness gradient: hinge years
The hinge years the awareness gradient reads every restriction against, domain by domain, as the Method page states them and as the printed book states them. They disagree on the women’s franchise hinge (1920 on the Method page, 1918 in the book); both are shown.

Six scribal systems and how long each ran, from the Sumerian edubba to the examination system and the gaokao together, in the book’s own words.
The cave floor: the genetic case list
Seven populations whose genomes carry the mark of a closed marriage boundary: four sealed by a text (India’s jatis, the Jewish diaspora, China, the Samaritans) and three closed without one (Finns, Amish, Samoans).

Scribal output: the research compilation
The project’s early research compilation behind the book’s numbers on scribes, literacy and written output: literacy and scribe populations by civilization, world literacy, printed books, surviving corpora, unbroken traditions, disruptions, transitions, and the modern saturation series (lawyers, papers, degrees), with the known data gaps.

- Table 2A of the compilation (manuscripts by century, credited to Buringh and Van Zanden 2009) is left out: its ranges do not match that paper’s Table 1 (for the 13th century it gives 200,000 to 350,000 where the paper gives 1,761,951). The manuscripts dataset carries the paper’s figures as the book uses them.
