Caves are dynamic and nested: they expand when a dragon conquers its neighbors (conquest connects the tunnels), contract when an empire fragments (collapse seals the tunnels and the tributary caves re-emerge, each with its own dragon), and nest (Nevada's cave inside America's). A cave forms where geography AND the current level of technology let the river pool long enough for surplus to accrue; every advance in technology pushes the frontier outward (river deltas, then canals, aqueducts, irrigation, dams, desalination). Map marker, not a magic number: a population cluster above about ten thousand held together long enough to be sorted. Each civilization row on this page is one dragon read across the caves it held; the stage spans describe the dragon, not the cave's size.",
